Our campus has been certified as a Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. A wildlife habitat garden attracts birds, butterflies, and other neighborhood wildlife. Native plants provide food eaten by a variety of wildlife. Serenity Pond provides a place for drinking, bathing, and breeding. Undeveloped wooded areas are resources for wildlife to reproduce, and to protect and nourish their young. Maintaining the grounds in such a way expresses our commitment to environmental stewardship.
Girl Scout Gold Award Project
In order to receive the Gold Award, a Girl Scout must address a community need that requires great planning and leadership to leave a lasting impact. For local Girl Scout Lucy, that need was right here at St. Monica’s. Our campus is beautiful and teeming with life, but with no reliable and safe way to access the nature around us, many people chose to stay on the sidewalks. Lucy and her team of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts worked tirelessly to create our Walking in Love path around Serenity Pond and our entire campus. This path allows parishioners and people from the local community to access our serene property and fully immerse themselves in nature.
When Lucy was finished with the trail, she had enough funds left over to erect three benches throughout the path to allow people to take a break and relax. We are forever grateful for the work that Lucy, her family, and her team performed to make the beauty of our campus more accessible. Take a walk along our Walking in Love path and experience it for yourself.
